PITCH: SONG SOCIETY X BROADWAY PODCAST NETWORK
A female-led, one-person, episodic podcast play that blends storytelling with music. “The Moth” meets “Tiny Desk.” (Or Mike Birbiglia + MTV Unplugged)
Show title: Song Society
Concept: Written and performed by Florencia Iriondo, “Song Society” is an audio musical dramedy. The show’s narrator reflects on life with her “primos” (cousins), offering glimpses of South American culture and universal family dynamics through vivid anecdotes spanning the 1980s to the present day.
These stories, woven with humor and nostalgia, are brought to life through original songs, immersive soundscapes, and Florencia’s signature voice—a literal and figurative bridge between continents, generations, and experiences.
Format: With themes of home, hope, love, family, friendship, and adventure, every episode features one story and one song. Each episode delivers a self-contained story paired with an original song. While episodic, and with each installment formatted as a standalone piece, the season follows a cohesive narrative arc with recurring characters and an evolving plot.
Tone: Casual, warm, heartwarming, fun, and nostalgic, as though the narrator is a close friend who’s sharing personal stories.
Music: Acoustic, folk-pop South American sound. (SOUTH Album as reference)
Length: 20-minute episodes released bi-weekly.
Audience and Market: Song Society appeals to theater lovers, podcast and live music enthusiasts alike, particularly those drawn to acoustic sets, and heartfelt, character-driven narratives. Its unique format—melding music, storytelling, and drama—has potential for:
Live spin-offs: Performances at festivals, theaters, or BPN events, including a run at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Cross-promotion: Collaborations with Broadway or Off-Broadway productions exploring similar themes.
International appeal: Highlighting universal themes through the lens of international culture as well as immigrant stories makes it globally resonant.
Episode 1 Outline
“Hola, I’m Florencia! I’m in New York, but I’m from Argentina, as you can probably tell from my accent. When I first met my ex’s mom—she’s from Syria but has lived in Argentina for 40 years—I thought, ‘How does she still have an accent?’ Well, here I am almost two decades out of Buenos Aires, and let me tell you, mine isn’t going anywhere. I think it got even stronger during the pandemic. I just gave up… What I haven’t given up on is maintaining a close relationship with my family back home.
"And I have a big family. Like, big-big."
The narrator introduces her cousins—“mis primos”—and their weekly Sunday asados (BBQs). She reminisces about how they’d gather every weekend, sharing stories, laughter, and food, no matter what.
“For my seventh birthday, I got a small Casio keyboard, so I’d spend all week preparing songs for our Sunday get-together. But one weekend, Guada—my favorite cousin—couldn’t make it. So I called her on the phone, a landline, and I said, “I’m gonna hang up and call you again. This time don’t pick up”. So I dial again, she doesn’t pick up, and I leave a message on the answering machine. The message? My song.”
…🎵Proceeds to sing an original song about being a child in the 1980s 🎵…
“From that day on, every week, a new tune. From me, for them. For us. About us. And so, the Song Society was born.”
Future Episodes
Each episode features a new anecdote paired with a song, introducing colorful family members and heartfelt (often hilarious) moments:
The Toothless Performer: A cousin breaks their teeth jumping off a carousel but still performs in the school play.
"Save the Planet!": Inspired by Free Willy, the cousins start an eco-campaign that almost gets them arrested but lands them a spot on TV.
The Youngest Show(wo)man: A bike ride to the local radio station leads to becoming the country’s youngest radio host.
Family Secrets at the Asado: Grandma’s “silly” anecdote accidentally reveals a hidden family history.
The Ghosts in Grandpa’s House: Stories of spectral Spanish ancestors from the 1900s.
The “Short” Trip: When a cousin’s “brief” journey ends in a life lived in the farthest corner of the world.
